Description
Introduction
In the crossroads of three continents, Cyprus has all
the attributes which make it a real botanists’ paradise.
On the one hand, being an island, Cyprus is adequately
isolated, to have allowed the evolution of a strong
endemic flowering element. At the same time, being
surrounded by big continents, it incorporates
botanological elements of the neighbouring land masses.
On the other hand, the island is big enough to be
characterized by a varied topography which goes along
with a varied climate, both from the point of view of
rainfall and temperature. The geographic location of the
island, its size, and the above variation in habitat result in
a rich and diversified flora. Among its 1500 species of
flowering plants, of which 75 are endemic, Cyprus has a
great number of pharmaceutical plants.
