Description

I wanted to narrate this story to my grandson George, like a fairy tale, so that I could save what I knew, leaving the rest, what they hadn’t told me, to my imagination. But surely that’s more or less how they must have lived? Isn’t that how we all live?

In the 1920s, a young man from Cyprus sets off to study medicine in Vienna. Dazzled by the Central European way of life, music and science, he also bears witness to the rise of fascism. He returns to Cyprus in 1940. A beautiful Greek woman becomes his assistant at work, and he is charmed by her. He does not want to get attached, however, and he sends her off to Alexandria. There, Kate lives through the apogee of Greek Alexandria during the reign of King Farouk.
