Description

”However practical the terms Neolithic or Chalcolithic may be, their use at the present stage of our knowledge of the early cultures of Cyprus might not be advisable since following the Carbon – 14 dated for the Khirokitia pre-pottery stage certain alterations have resulted involving also a gap. Moreover it is possible that Khirokitia was preceded by one or more stages which may one day be discovered and thus necessitate an alteration in this terminology. However it may not be altogether unreasonable to use the traditional terms for the various stages in addition to the key site-names, pending the establishment of more rational terminology parallel with that of the Western Asiatic mainland or of the whole continent surrounding Cyprus” (Dikaios 1962, 4).
