The manuscript records of Lord Charlemont’s travels in Greece and Turkey deserved a better fate than to lie unpublished, apart from a few excerpts, for over two centuries. They offer much of interest to many kinds of readers. Historians and sociologists are likely to welcome their detailed descriptions of people and places in the Ottoman Empire during a period when western observers were still scarce.
