Description

VASILIS VRYONIDES 1883-1958

Vasilis Vryonides is a particularly

interesting case in the history of

contemporary Cypriot art. He is

perhaps the second Cypriot.

to have ever taken painting

lessons at a School of Fine Arts

(second only to poet Vasilis

Michaelides), though he never

completed his studies. His efforts

focused on the study of and

experimentation with the mate-

rials of painting and he never

exhibited or traded his paint-

ings in any way, while he was

alive. Thus, his noteworthy efforts

remained unfortunately unknown

and he never took the place he

deserved among the found-

ing fathers of modern Cypriot

art.
