AUTHOR’S PREFACE
THE inception of a book on the birds of Cyprus is due in the first place to a
former Governor of the island, Sir Andrew Wright, K.C.M.G., who, in 1952,
invited the present writer to visit Cyprus with a view to preparing a book
on the subject. At that time my wife and I were completing some ornithological
investigations south of the Great Atlas in the northern Sahara, and it was
not until the beginning of 1954 that we were free to accept His Excellency’s
invitation. By that time Sir Andrew’s term of Governorship had been completed
and Mr. Fletcher Cooke, c.M.G., the Colonial Secretary, received us at Government
House pending the arrival of the new Governor, Sir Robert Armitage. We arrived
in Cyprus in the middle of a violent storm on 14th February and were landed on an
open beach at Dhekelia, the ship having been diverted from both Limassol and
Larnaca owing to the rough seas.
