Sea shells have attracted and fascinated humans since the earliest times of the evolution of man. Their beautiful colours, variety of shapes and designs and their abundance on the sea shores could not have been overlooks. Shells have been used as food, ornaments, tools and currency.
Cyprus being an island in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean had always cast on its shores as well as in its adjoining waters a great number of sea shells. Shells have been connected with the mythology of Cyprus too. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was born from the foam of the sea on a shell of the Pectinidae family, Pecten jacobeaus.
