Description

HE Cretans, upon hearing of the revolution on the Greek mainland in 1821, heartily joined in the revolt in the hope of freeing their own island of the cruel Turkish yoke and looking forward to becoming a part of Greece one day. Unfortunately the Great Powers, Great Britain, France and Russia, thought it unwise to unite Crete with Greece and handed the island back to Turkey.
