Description
The fourth of the series of Lectures on the History of Coinage, entitled “Coinage as Evidence for the Changing Prosperity of Cyprus in Byzantine and Medieval Times”, was dedicated to the memory of Professor James R. Stewart. The lecture was delivered by Professor Michael Metcalf, who was also the editor of James R. Stewart’s book “Lusignan Cyprus and its Coinage”, published by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation. The book consists of the work of Professor Stewart as left by him after his sudden death in 1962 and it is academically complemented by Professor Metcalf’s introductory essay “The Making of a Numismatic Monograph”. Prior to the lecture Dr Robert Merilees spoke of James R. Stewart’s life and contribution to archaeology and Professor Michael Metcalf revealed to the audience the fate of the Stavrokonnou hoard, the main provenance of Stewart’s numismatic collection.
